How Tax-Free Childcare Works

Understanding the government's top-up on childcare-account deposits — from application to payment

Complete guide

The Simple Explanation

For every £8 you pay in, the government adds £2 to your childcare account

£400
You pay
£500
Total available (£100 government top-up)

How It Works: Step-by-Step

Apply for Tax-Free Childcare

Apply online through the government's Childcare Choices website. You'll need to confirm your eligibility and provide basic information about your family and income.

  • • Check eligibility requirements
  • • Provide employment and income details
  • • Add your children's information
  • • Verify your identity

Get Your Childcare Account

Once approved, you'll receive your online childcare account. This is where you'll manage payments, view top-ups, and pay your childcare providers.

  • • Secure online account access
  • • Add approved childcare providers
  • • Set up payment preferences
  • • View your eligibility-period allowance

Pay Into Your Account

Add money to your childcare account using a debit card. The government adds 25% of what you pay in (equivalent to 20% of the final balance).

Example: Pay in £400 → Government adds £100 → You have £500 to spend

Pay Your Childcare Provider

Use the money in your account to pay approved childcare providers directly. Payments are made electronically through the government system.

  • • Select your childcare provider
  • • Enter the payment amount
  • • Confirm and send payment
  • • Check timing with your provider and account before a payment deadline

Eligibility-Period System Explained

Eligibility-Period Limits

Regular child
£500 per period
Eligible disabled child
£1,000 per period
Eligibility periods are personal to your HMRC account and normally last about 3 months. Unused allowance does not roll over.

Find Your Dates

Do not use calendar quarters. Check the start and end date of your current eligibility period in your HMRC account, then enter that start date in the calculator.

Reconfirmation Every 3 Months

You must reconfirm your eligibility every 3 months to continue receiving government top-ups. Here's what you need to know:

What to Update

  • • Employment status changes
  • • Income changes
  • • Benefit claims
  • • Family circumstances
  • • Contact details

Important Deadlines

  • • Reconfirm within deadline to avoid suspension
  • • Late reconfirmation may delay top-ups
  • • Set reminders for your reconfirmation date
  • • Check your account regularly for updates
Missing your reconfirmation deadline will stop government top-ups until you update your details.
